The Mexican national team, as one of the co-hosts of the World Cup, is returning to the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The team is set to face Ecuador on July 1.
Mexico National Team
During their 11-game unbeaten streak, Javier Aguirre’s squad has conceded only two goals. In their three group stage matches in this tournament, the “Tricolor” has allowed opponents to take only five shots on goal.
The Azteca Stadium has been a lucky venue for the Mexicans. The team has never lost a World Cup match there (6 wins, 2 draws) and has not suffered a defeat at this venue since September 2013.
Mexico has not conceded a goal after the 47th minute in its last eleven matches. Only in one of its last six matches did both teams score.
Ecuador National Team
Ecuador made history in the group stage. After two scoreless opening matches, the team managed to defeat Germany 2–1 in the third match. The team became only the second in the 21st century to fail to score a single goal in its first two World Cup group stage matches yet still advance to the knockout round.
It’s worth noting an interesting statistical fact: Ecuador has not conceded more than one goal in any of its last 26 matches.
In 13 of their last 16 matches, the South American side has scored fewer than 2.5 goals.
Nilson Angulo failed to score in his first eleven matches for the national team but found the back of the net against Germany.
Both teams are likely to field nearly their strongest lineups.

The hosts look quite strong. The team’s attacking line creates a large number of chances and gives their opponents few opportunities on defense.
Both teams have very solid defenses. Considering the strength of the national teams and this fact, a Mexican victory is an interesting option.
