The second day of competition in Nové Město began with the single mixed relay. The Ukrainian team was represented by Olena Horodna and Vitaliy Mandzyn.

This was the athletes’ first appearance in this discipline this season — at the previous stage in Östersund, the ‘blue and yellows’ were represented by Merkushyna and Dudchenko, according to Sport Bet.

Olena Horodna took the lead in the first stage of the race, demonstrating the highest speed among all athletes (53.2 seconds). Our biathlete used one cartridge at each of the two firing ranges.

Vitaliy Mandzyn made a confident start, hitting all the targets at the first shooting range. Although the Ukrainian needed two extra cartridges at the ‘standing’ range, he managed to maintain a high pace — Vitaliy handed over the baton to Gorodna in second place.

Although Gorodnia did not earn any penalty loops in the third stage of the race, she added four extra cartridges to her tally, three of which she used to hit the last target in the standing position. The athlete passed the baton to Vitaliy Mandzyn in 5th place (+27.9 seconds behind).

The final shooting was a challenge for Manzin, as he made two mistakes in both the prone and standing positions, using additional cartridges. Unfortunately, the delay at the last shooting range proved critical — the Ukrainian was overtaken by the Swiss athlete and crossed the finish line in sixth place.

Later it became known that Germany, the leader of the race, was disqualified due to a violation of the rules for handling weapons by athlete Marlene Fichtner while at the firing line. This allowed the Ukrainian team to move up to fifth place.
