Joshua Doan gained fame primarily in the West, as he played for the Coyotes.
Joshua Thomas Doan (born 1 February 2002) is an American right winger currently playing for the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL. Interestingly, he was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2021 draft with the 37th overall pick. And most importantly, Josh is the son of the legendary Shane Doan, the Coyotes’ all-time leading scorer! It seems that hockey genes are working at full capacity.
Playing career
Doan grew up in Arizona and played for the Phoenix Junior Coyotes. The Chicago Steel of the US Hockey League selected the player with the 95th overall pick in the 2018 league futures draft. Before joining the Chicago club, Doan spent another year with the Junior Coyotes. He tied for 16th on the team with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 45 games and was passed over by all 31 NHL teams in the 2020 draft.
In June 2019, Doan announced he was joining the Arizona State University team.
In his second year after being drafted, the hockey player returned to the Steelers and became one of the team’s leading scorers, helping them win the USHL Clark Cup. He finished third in the Steel (behind Sean Farrell and Matthew Coronato) and in the entire league with 70 points (31 goals, 39 assists) in 53 games. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked 19-year-old Doan 87th among the top North American skaters eligible for the 2021 NHL Draft.
In the summer of 2021, the Arizona Coyotes selected Doan in the second round, 37th overall, in the 2021 NHL Draft. After two years as captain of the Sun Devils (2022-23 season), Josh Doan decided he had had enough of university! On 16 March 2023, he signed his first professional three-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes. But since the deal didn’t kick in until the following season, the club sent him to their American Hockey League (AHL) team, the Tucson Roadrunners, to ‘warm up’ for the rest of the year.
Doan started the 2023–24 season with the Roadrunners, leading the team in goals (26) and points (46). On 25 March 2024, he was called up to the Coyotes. The next day, Doan made his NHL debut and scored two goals (including the game-winner) in a 6-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Joshua thus became the first player in franchise history to score multiple goals in his debut game.
After the 2024-25 season, Doan was traded by the rebranded Utah Mammoths, along with Michael Kesselring, to the Buffalo Sabres for JJ Peterka. The trade took place on 25 June 2025.
International career
Doan represented the United States at the 2025 World Hockey Championship, where he scored one goal in nine games and helped the United States win its first gold medal since 1933.
