Canadian ice hockey player, centre forward and captain of the NHL club Carolina Hurricanes, 2007 world champion Jordan Staal was born on 10 September 1988 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The Staal family and the NHL
Jordan is one of four Staal brothers. His older brother Eric is a former Carolina captain, Olympic champion and world champion. His second brother, Mark, is a defenceman for the Florida Panthers.
His younger brother Jared, although he has only played two games in the NHL, made his debut in the starting line-up for the Hurricanes alongside his brothers Eric and Jordan on 25 April 2013. Interestingly, Carolina’s opponent in that game was Mark Staal’s Rangers. Eric, Jordan and Mark are the first trio of brothers in NHL history to each play more than 1,000 games in the league.
In the 2006 NHL draft, Jordan was selected in the first round as the second overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Interestingly, three years earlier, Carolina selected his brother Eric with the same pick.
In his first season, the young hockey player Jordan scored 29 goals and received many advances. The player was called up to the World Championship, which took place in Russia, where Jordan scored two points in nine games. Throughout his subsequent career in the NHL, the player has never scored more than 25 goals in a season.
In the 2008–09 season, when Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup, Jordan Staal scored 49 points (22 and 27) in 82 regular season games and 9 points (4 and 5) in 24 playoff games.
In the summer of 2012, Jordan was traded to Carolina for a first-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, forward Brandon Sutter, and defenceman prospect Brian Dumoulin.
In the spring of 2021, Jordan played his 1,000th game in the NHL regular season.
In April 2024, Staal played his 1,250th game in the NHL regular season.
