In the 12th round of the UPL, Dynamo lost to LNZ. This is the second defeat for Kyiv in the Ukrainian championship season. Prior to that, the team lost in the championship in the ‘classic’ derby of the previous round against Shakhtar (1:3). Thus, their brilliant unbeaten streak in the Premier League was interrupted.
In domestic competitions, Kyiv faced a crucial match against their direct rival, LNZ. On the eve of the match, the rivals had 20 points each after 11 rounds, and Dynamo was ahead of Cherkasy only on additional indicators.
A goal just before half-time allowed LNZ to take the lead. The team managed to develop a quick attack in stoppage time in the first half, which Prosper Oba could have finished, but goalkeeper Ruslan Neshcheret saved his shot. Picking up the ball, Yevhen Pastukh took an accurate shot from outside the penalty area. The result was 1-0.
In the second half, there was a controversial moment when Denys Popov fell in the LNZ penalty area. This gave Kyiv hope for an 11-metre penalty, but after reviewing the episode on VAR, the main referee Mykola Balakin decided not to award a penalty, recognising Popov’s collision with the opponent’s captain Nazar Muravsky as mutual struggle rather than a foul.
Ukrainian Football Championship – where does Dynamo Kyiv stand
It should be noted that the last two consecutive defeats in the championship were suffered by Kyiv in the autumn of 2023. At that time, Dynamo lost to Polissya Zhytomyr (2:3) and Dnipro (0:1).
Thus, the twelfth round will be closed by the championship leader Shakhtar, which has a one-point advantage, with a match against Poltava. LNZ is in second place in the standings, with the same number of points as Polissya.
Unfortunately, Dynamo is only in fourth place.
