Real Madrid is preparing a lawsuit against UEFA for damages amounting to more than four billion euros. According to the Financial Times, the Spanish club estimates the losses caused by the European Football Union’s blocking of the Super League plans in 2021 at €4.5-4.7 billion and intends to recover them from the main organisation.
The management of the ‘cream’ is considered one of the main supporters of the Super League project. The Madrid District Court rejected the appeal of UEFA, LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation RFEF against the 2024 commercial court ruling.
In May 2024, the commercial court partially upheld the claim of European Super League Company SL (ESLC), responsible for organising the planned tournament, against possible sanctions from the world federation FIFA and UEFA. The European football body announced in a statement that it would carefully study the court’s decision before making a decision on further steps.
The dispute concerns accusations that UEFA abused its dominant position in European football competitions. In 2021, the organisation threatened clubs participating in the project with exclusion from UEFA competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.
In addition, the clubs’ players would not be allowed to participate in international competitions such as the European Championship or the World Cup. Ultimately, UEFA threatened disciplinary proceedings and financial sanctions against both the clubs and the individuals responsible.
The protest from leagues, fans and politicians was so great that most clubs quickly abandoned the idea. With the exception of Real Madrid and Barcelona, no one currently supports the project.
Is the Super League a failed idea?
In April 2021, Real Madrid’s management planned to hold an annual club football competition. The tournament could have become a competitor to the UEFA Champions League.
Fifteen ‘founding clubs’ were planned to become permanent participants in the competition, which they would also manage. An additional five teams would be able to compete annually based on their results in the previous season.
UEFA issued an official statement criticising the idea. The association was supported by the national associations and leagues of England, Spain and Italy, as well as the political leadership of these countries.
