On 16 September, the Ukrainian national volleyball team managed to win at the 2025 World Championship with a convincing result. Their first success at the world tournament came against the Algerian national team (3:0 in sets). The Ukrainians won the final game with a crushing score of 25:11.
This victory ended a series of four consecutive defeats. This result also allows Ukraine to continue fighting for a place in the 2025 World Cup playoffs.
The start of the first set was difficult, as the Ukrainians were unable to mount an effective attack, while the Algerians scored points on blocks. Despite this, the ‘blue and yellows’ managed to pull ahead by four points at the halfway point of the set. In the end, they won the set, increasing their lead to +8 – 25:17.
The Ukrainian players took the lead in the second set from the first serve. The second set was marked by a surge. The Ukrainian volleyball players scored six points in a row. In the end, the second set ended with a confident victory with a score of 25:12.
In the third set, the Ukrainian national team demonstrated total dominance on the court. On Vasyl Tupchiy’s serve, the team earned 12 breaks. By the end of the match, the ‘blue and yellows’ had successfully increased their lead over Algeria to a crushing 14 points.
Substitute Dmytro Yanchuk was the most productive player on the court. He scored 18 points. Vasyl Tupchiy (12 points) and Yuriy Semenyuk (11 points) also crossed the 10-point mark.
2025 Volleyball World Championship – how Ukraine is performing
The Ukrainian national volleyball team is competing in the final stage of the World Championship for the third time in history. At the 2025 tournament, the ‘blue and yellows’ are trying to advance to the playoffs in Group F. In this quartet, the team’s rivals are the reigning world champions Italy, Belgium and Algeria.
In the match against Belgium, the Ukrainians got off to an unsuccessful start in the competition, losing in three sets. Ukraine’s opponent in the second round of the competition was Algeria, which ranks 87th in the world team rankings. The match against the African team was decisive for Ukraine in the fight for a place in the playoffs: in order to keep their chances alive, the ‘blue and yellows’ had to win.

On Thursday, 18 September, Ukraine’s national team will play its next match against Italy. The game will take place at 4:30 p.m. Kyiv time and will be decisive for the ‘blue and yellows’ in their fight to reach the playoffs.
