Kasper Hjulmand will become the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen. This was announced by the Bundesliga club.
The Dane signed a contract until 30 June 2027.
Jüllmann was among the well-known names mentioned as a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed very quickly. The new specialist has been tasked with overseeing a major rebuild of the team, which is currently in second place, following the departure of key players such as Florian Wirtz, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka.
The Dane is no stranger to the Bundesliga. Eleven years ago, he had moderate success as head coach of Mainz, but was dismissed after only nine months.
As coach of his country’s national team, Hjulmand caused a sensation at the 2021 European Championship. The Danes lost 2-1 to England in the semi-finals. Things got even worse with their elimination in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. A 2-0 defeat to Germany in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship was Hjulmand’s last game as national coach. He has not held a coaching position since then.
It should be noted that Bayer Leverkusen quickly dismissed coach Erik ten Hag after only the first two games of the season. The Dutch specialist himself did not hide his disappointment.
