Winfred Yavi, Olympic champion in Paris, managed to set a world record. She achieved this successful result at the Diamond League event in Brussels.
The runners participated in an innovative distance from World Athletics, which was actually a 1-mile obstacle course. To do this, they had to complete four laps instead of the usual seven and a half.
In addition to Yavi, seven other athletes ran the innovative distance in Brussels. Angelina Ellis was her biggest competitor during the race. She lost to her by 6.61 seconds at the finish line.
Yavi managed to set a time of 4:40.13 minutes. The Bahraini athlete also set a world record, as there have been almost no races at this distance at the highest level.
‘I wanted to rewrite history. It was harder than 3,000 metres: I had to adjust my jumps because I was approaching the hurdles faster,’ Yavi said in a comment to the competition organisers.
The athlete also set a sixth national record when she ran 1000 metres with hurdles. Four of these races turned out to be the fastest in the history of Asia.
The new race featuring Yavi will take place on Thursday, 28 August, at 21:09 Kyiv time. She managed to reach the Diamond League final in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
