The Women’s Tour de France ended with an exciting final stage. Former mountain biker Pauline Ferrand-Prevost won the overall classification.

Olympic mountain biking champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevost won the fourth women’s stage of the Tour de France. In Sunday’s finale, the 33-year-old Visma-Lease athlete also won her second solo stage victory.

Confusion on the final stage

Unlike the men’s race, the yellow jersey was still up for grabs on the final day of the race. A mountainous stage with the second highest elevation gain, from Pra-sur-Arly to the ski and bike resort of Chatel-les-Portes-du-Solay, offered plenty of opportunities to fight.

Final overall standings of the Women’s Tour de France

Ferrand-Prevot started the 124.1 km race with a 2 minute 37 second lead over Australian Sarah Gigante. The descent at the beginning of the stage caused a real stir. Gigante lost contact only after 17 kilometers. Ferrand-Prevot also had to fight to get back on track.

As the race progressed, Gigante seized the initiative, as she did on the penultimate stage, but she constantly had difficulties on the descent. She lost a good minute on the Col de Joux and fell behind in the classification.

Ferran-Prevost’s attack

Ferran-Prevost attacked with six kilometers to go, securing her second stage win and impressively ending the long wait for a Tour de France winner.
