How long has the Volleyball Nations League been around
The Volleyball Nations League for the world’s best teams was launched in 2018 by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) as a successor to the World League (men) and World Grand Prix (women) competitions that started in 1990.
Instead of the previous 16 national teams, 18 men’s and 18 women’s teams will be eligible to compete for the first time in 2025.
Germany, Japan, Italy, Turkey, China, Poland, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Belgium, France, Thailand, Serbia and South Korea will compete for the women’s competition.
Germany, Serbia, Brazil, Japan, Ukraine, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Argentina, France, Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Cuba, Bulgaria, the USA, China and Iran take part in the men’s competition.
Who has won the Nations Volleyball League the most times
In the men’s competition, the record holders are Russia (winners in 2018 and 2019), which was unable to participate in the competition due to the attack and large-scale assault on Ukraine, and the current champions, France (winners in 2022 and 2024).
In the women’s tournament, the United States has won three times (2018, 2019, 2021), and the current champions are Italy (winners in 2022 and 2024).
Volleyball Nations League – what is the schedule and the grid
The tournament features 18 teams meeting over three weekends at different venues around the world. Each team will play four matches, for a total of twelve in the preliminary round.
The top eight teams in the overall preliminary table will qualify for the final rounds in Lodz/Poland (women/23-27 July) and Ningbo/China (men/30 July-3 August).
Volleyball Nations League and prize money
Each victory in the preliminary round brings $9,500, each defeat – $4,250. The two winners of the Nations Volleyball League will receive $1 million, and the other two podium places will be awarded $500,000 and $300,000.
As a reminder, Ukraine retains its place in the top 5 of the Volleyball League of Nations on the eve of the final game of the first week. On Sunday, 15 June, the national team of Ukraine will play the final match of the first game week against the national team of Iran
