Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis has once again improved his world record. At the Diamond League in Stockholm, the Swede cleared 6.28 metres in his first attempt.

He improved his world record once again in his home country. At the Diamond League in Stockholm, the 25-year-old Swede cleared 6.28 metres on his first attempt.

Twelfth world record for Duplantis

This is the twelfth time that the two-time Olympic champion has entered the record book after breaking Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie’s mark of 6.16 metres in February 2020. The Frenchman finished fourth in Stockholm with a mark of 5.80 metres. Australian Curtis Marshall took second place (5.90m), and Menno Vloon from the Netherlands took third place (5.80m).

Duplantis improved his best result by another centimetre. The Swede broke the previous world record only on 1 March at an indoor competition in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Once again, his competitors could only watch in amazement.

“I really wanted it. I wanted to do it here in Stockholm in front of all these people. There was something very special in the audience today. I think it will be one of the best memories of my career,” said Duplantis after his 37th one-day victory in the Diamond League.

In the long jump, European champion Malaika Mihambo had to settle for 6.75 metres and fourth place. The winner was Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall of the United States with a distance of 7.05 metres.

Karl Bebendorf, who took third place at the European Championships, achieved an unexpected success in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. The Dresden athlete won in a tough field with a personal best of 8:11.81 minutes. Former European 100m champion Gina Lückenkemper finished third in the 200m, clocking her best time since 2016 at 22.76 seconds on a sprint course she rarely runs, albeit with a strong headwind.

The German Athletics Association (DLV) also recorded success in the women’s discus throw: Kirstin Pudenz, a silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, won with a distance of 64.86m in her first attempt.

As a reminder, the Ukrainians won the team event at the European Championships in freestyle wrestling.
