The US national ice hockey team won 1-0 against the Swiss national team. The team has won its third World Cup title.

In Sunday’s final against Switzerland in Stockholm, Tage Thompson scored in the third minute of overtime to give the Americans a well-deserved 1-0 victory in the final. This is the third World Cup title for the USA and the first since 1960, while Switzerland suffered its fourth bitter defeat in the final after 2013, 2018 and 2024.

Prior to that, the hosts, Sweden, won a bronze medal after defeating Denmark, an unexpected semi-finalist. In Stockholm, the eleven-time world champions defeated the tournament hosts 6-2. Despite finishing third, the home tournament ended in disappointment for the Swedes, while reaching the semi-finals was the biggest success at the World Championships for the conquerors of Canada, Denmark.

The Swiss easily reached the final, defeating Austria 6-0 and Denmark 7-0. The USA defeated much more famous teams from Finland (5:2) and Sweden (6:2). Swiss goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni had to demonstrate his skills several times in front of 12,530 spectators at the Avici Arena. The 37-year-old goalkeeper saved his team from falling behind early on and had to make several saves during the game.

The Swiss national hockey team was unable to cope with the dynamic Americans. Gennoni also saved a weak shot from Conor Garland. Even with a man advantage, the USA had more chances. Subsequently, both teams took fewer risks as the game progressed.

The power play opportunities were not used. However, the Americans, the youngest team at the World Cup with an average age of 24, repeatedly created good chances. At the end of regular time, the statistics were 39:24 shots on goal in favour of Coach Ryan Warsofsky’s team.

After 60 scoreless minutes, the game went into three-on-three overtime. Thompson, who is under contract with the Buffalo Sabres, picked up speed on the counterattack and left Genoni no chance with a powerful shot.

The third place match

In the third place match, the Swedes secured the bronze medal of the home tournament by defeating the tournament hosts, Denmark, with a score of 6:2 (0:0, 3:0, 3:2). The Danes, who sensationally defeated Canada in the quarterfinals, lost their first World Cup medal.

In 2024, Switzerland also lost in the final to the Czech Republic.
